Sallie sent in a picture of her granddaughter enjoying Halloween and fall crafts at Chautauqua. There are so many activities for children and grandchildren at Mountain Air!

Fall color is beautiful right now. Of course, in the mountains of western North Carolina, there is no real peak. It is so bio-diverse here that fall color goes on and on for weeks, painted every day with different colors. But this moment is beautiful and will be for the next few weeks. Right now, there is still much green in the landscape, but also the fall colors that create a beautiful patchwork quilt are popping out everywhere. Cloud inversions are kissing the mountain most mornings. Fall wildflowers are blooming- purple asters and bottle gentian are especially plentiful. More detailed fall color reports can be found here and here. A taste of the mountain around the Heritage Ridge Villas follows. Louise Images © 2016 Louise Lindsay
Not only are there all sorts of organized activities available at Mountain Air, but there are also many member-organized activities. One of these is Dining Divas. About once a month, women get together and each woman prepares a gourmet dish, and then they all dine together at someone's home. If you are interested, just ask almost anyone around the mountain, and someone will make sure you are invited. Mountain Air and the Heritage Ridge Villas are a very friendly, inviting and welcoming community. One of our residents, Sallie, hosted the Dining Divas recently, and you can see what a lovely table she set. Maybe there is even a new name, "Dining Divas With A View"!
Be sure to check out Mountain Air Country Club's Fall festivities, Sat., Oct. 8, 4-7 P.M. on the #1 fairway, as well as an all day trip to Hickory Nut Gap Farm. These activities are for club members only, and real estate guests. Hickory Nut Gap Farm in Fairview, NC can also be visited by anyone. Meanwhile, right here in Burnsville, Fri. night brings The Great Gatsby, at the Parkway Playhouse. And Sat. brings Newtown with Yancey native Mitchell Cannon playing bluegrass (fiddle) at the Burnsville Town Center.
Many residents have enjoyed a visit to Rob Levin’s studio, and have enjoyed prior studio tours on the Hwy. 80 S. Art Hop. Rob Levin is a world class glass artist in nearby Celo, NC. http://www.robertlevin.com/ From Rob Levin comes this message, sent out to those on his email list: “If you're in the mountains next weekend, here's a quick reminder that the Hwy. 80 South Art Hop will be Saturday & Sunday, October 8 & 9, from 10 - 5. A number of studios on or near Rte 80, south of Micaville, will be opening our doors to visitors, including 4 of the 5 glass studios in our valley. With the tour involving a relatively small area, it should be a relaxed, easy to navigate studio tour. Studios will be marked with Art Hop signs; maps and info can be picked up at the One of a Kind Gallery in Micaville. Here's a link for more info: http://www.80arthop.com/ Also on tap next weekend -- the Spruce Pine Potters Market and fall colors at higher elevations! AND: Mark your calendars for the annual TRAC Holiday Studio Tour, coming up December 2,3 &4. You'll be pleased to know my daughter Hannah will be joining me in my studio to exhibit her pottery. More info to follow next month. We had lunch at the Harvest Market restaurant, near Bakersville. Locals recommended it, and the food was fabulous, organic and fresh. Check it out. 1284 NC-226, Bakersville, NC 28705, (828) 537-4726,
Debbie and Diane (Resident and friend) Sallie just got a pedicure from Anna. Dazzle dry is great stuff - vegan, dries in 5 minutes without lights, natural nail enhancer, non yellowing, etc.
The wonders of Spa Tohi at Mountain Air! Some of the sugar and red maple specimen trees around the Heritage Ridge Villas are going into full color. Other trees are simply kissed by fall color at this point. Overall the trees are mostly green with lovely pops of color starting.
Cloud inversions mean that we have sunshine in the sky but clouds below us. One resident enjoys a moment of morning yoga above the clouds before a round of golf. Because it is fall, the occasional morning cloud inversions of summer have become an almost daily gift.
Right here in Burnsville, once a month, classic movies on the big screen on Monday night at 7 p.m. What a treasure! BLT Classic Movie Club Screening “To Kill A Mockingbird” Saturday September 19th At The Yancey Theatre. “To Kill A Mockingbird” is a much loved and critically acclaimed 1962 classic film based on Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize winning autobiographical novel of the same name. The plot and characters are based loosley on the authors observation of her family and neighbors. The story is set in a small Alabama town in the 30's and focuses on honest, highly respected lawyer Atticus Finch magnificently played by Gregory Peck. The film is a portrayal of childhood innocence, racial prejudice, violence, moral tolerance and dignified courage. Included in the cast are Robert Duval, making his film debut as “Boo” Radley and two delightful child stars Mary Badham and Phillip Alford as Atticus Finch's two children “Scout and “Jem.” “To Kill A Mockingbird” is a great classic movie whos story is moving, passionate and told with great humor and tenderness. . Showtime is Monday September 19th 7:00pm at the Yancey Theatre. There are no ticket sales for these events but your donations are greatly appreciated. For more information call 682-2609 or email neldabobwilson@gmail.com Friends from Nashville visiting. Some played golf. Some took a trip to nearby Weaverville. We all highly recommend the Well Bred Bakery there. Weather at Mountain Air is gorgeous also! Cool and sunny. Touches of leaf color change.
Yesterday we enjoyed a wonderful guided nature walk with Kat (Mountain Air, 's resident naturalist) who showed us many things about mushrooms, blueberries, and trees, and took a group of maybe 12 or more Mountain Air residents to a lookout where we could see from Camps at Creekside up to the Club Villas and all around. It was a free Sunday 10 AM guided nature hike. We recommend these frequent guided nature walks to all. She gave us the notes below. And the 4" video gives you a glimpse of Kat's teachings. Last night, we enjoyed the wonderful "final" "Champagne and Ivories" concert by Brian Gurl, at his log-cabin home here in Burnsvile, NC. He is moving to FL, but is willing to return next season for private in-home concerts (20 people or so). So anyone who wants to set this up should contact him. He simply needs someone with a piano, and a home to host a "Champagne and Ivories" concert. Also, look for him to return possibly to the Burnsville Town Center next season. Jan and Steve We attended the opening of H. Allen Benowitz' photography exhibit. It is up for the next week, and we recommend seeing it. It is at TRAC (Toe River Arts Council) in nearby Spruce Pine. A great afternoon hike to the Jump Off trail lookout. About 3/4 mile from the trail-head at Timber Sky, you reach this lovely lookout, at 4,750 ft. The view is toward Mt Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi, and the Black Mountains. Today was a lovely sunny, cool day for a hike. |
